Barcelona: world capital of architecture for 2026

UNESCO has designated Barcelona as the World Capital of Architecture for 2026. This initiative emphasizes the role of architecture and local culture in addressing contemporary challenges, benefiting both today’s society and future generations. It also underscores the quality of the city’s architecture and the innovation demonstrated by Barcelona-based studios.

Key projects highlighted during the event

MUR Arquitectura: projects focused on sustainability and versatility

Marta Mur, partner at MUR Arquitectura, presented several recent projects from our studio, showcasing our commitment to flexibility, sustainability, and user experience.

  • Corporate Headquarters for Fanuc Iberia in Sant Cugat del Vallès: This project features office spaces that foster collaboration, an advanced logistics warehouse, and dedicated learning and testing areas. Every detail was designed to encourage creativity and efficiency, creating a work environment that drives growth and innovation.
  • Moventia Headquarters in Sant Cugat: This revolutionary office building redefines workplace concepts. With a design that promotes flexibility and well-being, Moventia’s new headquarters is an example of how architecture can enhance work dynamics and employee satisfaction.
  • Rehabilitation of Casa Narcisa in La Garriga: We undertook a journey into the past to revitalize this modernist gem. The restoration of this twin-family home not only preserves its historical value but also enhances its original beauty, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity.
  • Interior Design of the ME Barcelona Hotel: Every detail in the interiors of this hotel was designed to enrich the guest experience. We created diverse, sophisticated spaces that invite relaxation and enjoyment in a unique, welcoming atmosphere.
  • Renovation of the Innside Apolo Hotel: This project transformed the hotel with a refreshed brand image and improved functionality. The inclusion of coworking spaces and optimized F&B areas reflects a contemporary approach that meets the needs of modern travelers.
  • Nou Camp Nou: As architectural consultants for the renovation of this iconic stadium, we collaborated with ABAA and other prestigious studios to ensure every upgrade honors the history and grandeur of this sports symbol while adapting it for the present and future.
  • Gran Meliá Torre Melina Hotel: We delivered a comprehensive transformation of the former Hotel Juan Carlos I, enhancing its sophistication and category. Updates included redesigned rooms, common areas, and dining spaces, such as a Michelin-starred restaurant and a spectacular rooftop for events. This project is a statement of luxury and excellence in the hospitality sector.

All these projects stand out for adapting to the evolving needs of their users.

Contributions from other studios

  • PICH Architects: Presented the future CaixaForum Málaga, a project aimed at revitalizing an urban area through innovative and sustainable design.
  • JPAM City Makers: Showcased the new VITA student residence in Poblenou and the transformation of a section of Gran Via, along with other public space and urban development projects.
  • BACH Arquitectes: Shared their vision on architectural heritage intervention, featuring projects like the rehabilitation of Casa Alesan and the transformation of Masía Can Carreres.
  • Benedetta Tagliabue – EMBT Architects: Highlighted projects such as the Santa Caterina Market and San Giacomo Church in Ferrara, emphasizing materiality and the creation of community spaces.

The event concluded with an engaging debate on the trends and challenges facing contemporary architecture.
